Early Detection Of High Blood Pressure In Children

We usually think of High Blood Pressure—also known as Hypertension—as a problem that affects adults. But, in fact, the condition can be present at any age.
Rates of High Blood Pressure in children and adolescents have increased in the last 20 years in the United States. 

An estimated 3.5% of all children and teens in the United States havehigh blood pressure, however, the condition often goes undetected and untreated.




Childhood Hypertension, particularly in pre-adolescents, is more often secondary to an underlying disorder than in adults. Kidney disease is the most common secondary cause of Hypertension in children and adolescents.

COMPLICATIONS

Hypertension occurs in around 0.2 to 3% of newborns; however, blood pressure is not measured routinely in healthy newborns. Hypertension is more common in high risk newborns. A variety of factors, such as gestational age, post conceptional age and birth weight needs to be taken into account when deciding if a blood pressure is normal in a newborn.
Blood pressure rises with age in childhood, failure to thrive, seizures, irritability, lack of energy, and difficulty in breathing can be associated with Hypertension in neonates and young infants. In older infants and children, Hypertension can cause headache, unexplained irritability, fatigue, failure to thrive, blurred vision, nosebleeds, and facial paralysis. 

In 2004 the National High Blood Pressure Education Program recommended that children aged 3 years and older have blood pressure measurement at least once at every health care visit and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and American Academy of Pediatrics made a similar recommendation.
High blood pressure in children is almost always asymptomatic—that is, without any symptoms or noticeable discomfort.

In many cases, high blood pressure seems to develop with age. As a result, a child may show no signs of High Blood Pressure as an infant, but may develop the condition as he or she grows.

By age 7, more than 50% of Hypertension is due to obesity; this rises to 8595% by the teenage years. Thus, good eating habits (without overeating and emphasizing foods low in sodium, low in added sugar and high in fruits and vegetables) and plenty of physical activity are important throughout the early years of childhood (and for the rest of life).
Diagnosing High Blood Pressure in Children​ If your child’s blood pressure is high, your pediatrician may recommend tests to see if there is an underlying medical problem causing it. These tests include studies of the urine and blood. Sometimes, ultrasounds are used to examine the heart or the kidneys. If no medical problem can be found, your child will be diagnosed with essential Hypertension—the word essential refers only to the fact that no cause could be found.

Management & Treatment 

The first-line treatment for high blood pressure in children remains lifestyle changes.

*.If obesity is a possible cause, the first step will be to have your child lose weight. This will need to be very closely monitored by your pediatrician. Not only will weight loss lower blood pressure, it can provide many other health benefits as well.

*.Limit the salt in your child’s diet. Giving up the use of table salt and restricting salty foods can lower blood pressure in some patients. Common sources of salty foods include bread, deli meats, pizza, and foods prepared outside the home.  

 *.Use caution when shopping for packaged foods. Most canned and processed foods contain a great deal of salt, so check labels carefully to make sure the items have little or no salt added.

*.Help your child get more aerobic exercise. Aerobic physical activity can lower blood pressure, because of its effect on blood vessels and the heart—even when patients do not lose weight. The AAP recommends 60 minutes of physical activity each day.

FINAL NOTE.

Once your pediatrician knows your child has high blood pressure, he or she will want to check it frequently to make sure the Hypertension is not becoming more severe. Depending on how high the blood pressure is, your pediatrician may refer your child to a specialist—usually a pediatric nephrologist (kidney specialist) or pediatric cardiologist (heart specialist).

High Blood Pressure(HBP)- World Most Deadliest “Secret Killer”

Not many would know that High Blood Pressure (HBP) is also refer to as Hypertension (HTN or HT) many think this two are different from each other whereas they are both the same in definitions. I would define Hypertension to as the end result of High Blood Pressure.

Hypertension (HTN or HT), also known as High Blood Pressure (HBP), is along-termmedical condition in which the blood pressure in the arteries is persistently elevated.
If a person has High Blood Pressure it means that the walls of the arteries are receiving too much pressure repeatedly – the pressure needs to be chronically elevated for a diagnosis of Hypertension to be confirmed.
It is known as the “silent killer” since it has no initial symptoms. If left untreated or uncontrolled, high blood pressure can cause many health problems. These conditions include heart failure, vision loss, stroke, and kidney disease

Hypertension is the most important preventable risk factor for premature death worldwide. Many people have High Blood Pressure and don’t know it. The American Heart Association estimates high blood pressure affects approximately one in three adults in the United States, or about 76.4 million people. High Blood Pressure has become the second most common reason for medical office visits in the United States.

As of 2014, approximately one billion adults or ~22% of the population of the world have Hypertension. It is slightly more frequent in men, in those of low socioeconomic status, and prevalence increases with age. It is common in high, medium and low income countries. In Europe hypertension occurs in about 3045% of people as of 2013. In 1995 it was estimated that 43 million people (24% of the population) in the United States had hypertension or were taking anti-hypertensive medication. By 2004 this had increased to 29% and further to 34% (76 million US adults) by 2006. African American adults in the United States have among the highest rates of hypertension in the world at 44%. It is also more common in Filipino Americans and less common in US whites and Mexican Americans.

Types Of High Blood Pressure

There are two main types of high blood pressure: primary and secondary High Blood Pressure.




Primary or Essential High Blood Pressure

Primary, or essential, High Blood Pressure is the most common type of high blood pressure. This type of high blood pressure tends to develop over years as a person ages. In as many as 95% of reported High Blood Pressure cases in the U.S. and worldwide the underlying cause cannot be determined. Essential Hypertension is also greatly influenced by diet and lifestyle. The link between salt and high blood pressure is especially compelling. By contrast, people who add no salt to their food show virtually no traces of essential Hypertension.

The majority of all people with High Blood Pressure are “salt sensitive,” meaning that anything more than the minimal bodily need for salt is too much for them and increases their blood pressure. Other factors that can raise the risk of having essential hypertension include obesity; diabetes; stress; insufficient intake of potassium, calcium, and magnesium; lack of physical activity; and chronic alcohol consumption. The possible role of other factors such as caffeine consumption, and vitamin D deficiency are less clear.

One review suggest that sugar may play an important role in hypertension and salt is still one of the major causes of High Blood Pressure.




Secondary High Blood Pressure

Secondary High Blood Pressure is caused by another medical condition or use of certain medicines. Birth control pills– specifically those containing estrogen– and pregnancy can boost blood pressure, as can medications that constrict blood vessels. So we say when a direct cause for high blood pressure can be identified, the condition is now described as Secondary Hypertension.

How do you detect High Blood Pressure?

Unless your blood pressure is super-high, you won’t know unless it is measured. If blood pressure is very high, it can give you symptoms such as headaches. But usually you only know it’s ‘up‘ because it has been checked. Healthy adults should have a blood pressure check at least from the age of 40. It will be checked regularly at a younger age in conditions such as diabetes mellitus, pregnancy or kidney diseases. It will be checked more frequently (every 612 months) as you get older.

Mindful Power Helps Children Develops Healthy Relationship with Stress

Teaching children about their emotions has always been a touchy subject. In school, we were taught the basics — happy, sad, coping, moping, etc. — but exploring emotions any deeper than that was taboo. This week, we have an app that takes a holistic approach in helping kids become more mindful of their feelings.

Mindful Powers — available on iOS — aims to help children from early and middle childhood develop a healthy relationship with stress. Whether it’s stress or anxiety, the educational app includes a variety of different exercises that explain why you’re feeling this way and how to combat it.

Designed specifically to mix into a child’s routine, the app provides you with 10 interactive voice-guided sessions. It is free to download, and you’ll get the first three sessions for free. But after that, you’ll have to pay $5 to unlock the next seven — which includes over an hour of audio content.

When you first download the app, you’re welcomed to your “mindful play space” and a gem that turns into a plant after tapping it. You’re then greeted by a character called a “Flibbertigibbet,” and it’s your job to train it. It feels the same emotions as humans do, and even becomes a shy for a few seconds after meeting it.

While in the play space, you have the freedom of tapping on the Flibbertigibbet and watching it float around through what looks like a mix between space and the ocean. As a child, I was never exposed to practicing mindfulness because back then, adults most likely thought it was too complicated a subject. I was always encouraged to express my emotions and talk through my feelings when I was sad or mad, but stress and anxiety were never thrown around. I was particularly interested in seeing how this app would address the topics that once seemed tough to explain.

I started with the first session, titled “What is mindfulness?” and was brought to a disgruntled Flibbertigibbet. The normally smooth looking creature now had spikes and was grumpy. It was up to me to help him feel better, by smoothing out the spikes and calming him down.

Mindful Powers uses sensory-based repetitive interaction to trigger the body through its rest and digest response. This ultimately helps the little guys relax and regain focus. As you begin to smooth out your Flibbertigibbet, you can feel each bump going away, and can see it becoming happier as it changes back to its lighter color.

But when you pet the Flibbertigibbet, it has to be in a gentle manner. I was so heavily focused on smoothing out the entire surface quickly — as if I was on a timer in a video game — that I didn’t even realize how roughly I was tapping on the screen. With Flibbertigibbet’s guidance, I became aware of what I was doing and was able to control how I calm I was through the session. This one exercise is also the one you’ll always start out with before each session, to balance the mind and calm you down.

This definitely would’ve been useful when I was younger and showed signs of stress by coloring way too hard with crayons. In my current state of adulthood, I’ve transferred that habit into brushing my teeth too hard, or grinding my teeth at night and, well, you get the picture. Even though the app is meant for children, it’s a great introduction into meditation and calming mechanisms at a young age. Children can learn to incorporate it into adulthood without feeling ambushed by all of the overwhelming and unfamiliar feelings of stress and anxiety.

The next session focused on how to react during stressful situations. The narrator explained that there’s a part of our brain that freaks out and triggers a response to fight, run away, or even feel paralyzed. It also mentioned that sometimes our brains can’t tell the difference between real danger and not-real danger, which can cause us to overreact. Ultimately, the session teaches you to exercise the habit of responding more calmly to situations that aren’t dangerous. Practicing mindfulness in these situations can help to reduce irritability and anger when the situation doesn’t call for it.

After the “Train your brain!” session, I was brought to “Big breaths which focused on being in tune with your breathing and the moment. It’s described as the first step towards being able to master mindfulness — and mirrored my experience practicing meditation as an adult very closely. The narrator describes a picturesque scene throughout the session to help center your mind and focus on your breathing. This one was a bit longer than the prior sessions, but it should help children to understand and practice how to keep their minds from wandering or becoming too distracted.

Meanwhile, the Focus Time section is far more simple. It allows you to set a time for however long you’d like, and places your Flibbertigibbet on the screen to keep you focused. Each time you touch it, it will react with a sad or annoyed face and even sometimes words of encouragement to stay focused. Otherwise, it will sit there contently while the timer counts down to the end.

The app has an extremely easy-to-use interface and it’s hard not to eventually grow attached to your Flibbertigibbet. The bright graphics and calming background noise will keep children wanting to continue to the sessions. The animations also make it fun and entertaining, so they’ll completely forget it’s an educational, app and that they’re learning as they play.

Overall, Mindful Powers definitely sheds light upon the idea that children should learn how to be in touch with their emotions from a young age. The app gives them the chance to learn how to balance their thoughts and feelings through a calm and rational way. But in the beginning, it might take some getting used to —  which could require help from parents leading the way and participating in the process alongside them. This way, it will make for a great bonding experience as well.

Assessing Risk for Alzheimer’s Disease

Families have many things in common, including their genes, environment, and lifestyle. Together, these things may offer clues to diseases, like late- and early-onset Alzheimer’s, that can run in a family.

Late-Onset Alzheimer’s

There is no test yet to predict if someone will get late-onset Alzheimer’s, in which symptoms become apparent in a person’s mid-60s. If someone is worried about changes in his or her memory or other problems with thinking, he or she should talk with a doctor.

A doctor may ask the patient to make a family health history. A family health history can help a person know if Alzheimer’s disease runs in the family. It lists health facts about a person and close relatives. It is a written record of:

  • A family’s health conditions
  • Lifestyle habits like smoking and exercise
  • Where and how family members grew up

A family health history can show patterns of disease and risk factors. Try to include health facts about three generations—grandparents, parents, and children.

People can’t change the genes they inherit from their parents, but they can change things like diet, physical activity, and medical care to prevent diseases that may run in the family.

Early-Onset Alzheimer’s

There is a test to learn if a person has the gene changes that cause familial Alzheimer’s disease, or FAD, which occurs between a person’s 30s and mid-60s.

If someone has a family history of FAD, he or she should talk with a doctor about getting tested.

A doctor may suggest meeting first with a genetic counselor. This type of counselor helps people learn the risk of getting genetic conditions. They also help people make decisions about testing and what comes next.
